Spousal Sponsorship: How Canada
Immigration Spot Fake Marriage
Spousal sponsorship is one of the easiest ways to immigrate to Canada. If you are an immigrant and you will sponsor your wife of many years, proving the genuineness of the marriage is easy. First, you came from the same country. Second, you have been married for several years. Things become easier if you have children. However, the problem may start if you sponsor someone whom you just married for a few months. Prepare to face a strict immigration process as you establish the authenticity of your marital relationship.
Things become difficult if you are a Canadian citizen and you are sponsoring your spouse from another country. Canada immigration officers dissect all the information to make sure the marriage is not fake or made for convenience. Yes, spousal sponsorship is one of the immigration programs being ‘abused’ by some people. Hence, Canada visa offices in different countries keep an eye on marriage fraud.
How do Canada immigration officers work?
Have you wonder how is it inside the Canada visa office? Surely, each one of us would want to know how visa officers work. We all want to know the easiest ways to immigrate to Canada, right? So, how long do they read an applicant’s information? How do they make an assessment for spousal sponsorship?
Vic Satzewich, a professor from the McMaster University, will let us in on the secret. Okay, he’s believed to be just the second Canadian researcher to be able to have access in five decades. The late Freda Hawkins, a University of Toronto professor, was the first to do a research in Europe in the early 1960s.
From 2010 to 2012, he went inside the 11 visa offices’ so-called ‘black box’ and interviewed 128 officers and managers. He traveled from Europe to the United States, South America, Africa, Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean to observe application processing.

But…how do they spot fake marriage?
There’s not a clear rule or guideline on how the immigration officers determine marriage fraud. There are factors to consider, though, including compatibility, knowledge of each other, financial circumstances and others. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada provided training materials on this specific task. However, common sense is also a requirement to evaluate applications. Everything still depends on the information provided. Therefore, you have to be very careful on what you will write on the application. Both of you have to be cautious of the things that you will say during the interview.
Does the spousal sponsorship remain to be one of the easiest ways to immigrate to Canada? Yes. For as long as you can prove that the marriage is genuine, you have nothing to worry about getting approval.
