The Best Home Care for Your Loved One(s)

It’s difficult when parents or loved ones age and lose their independence. You want to help them maintain their quality of life at home but cannot provide the full-time care they so desperately need, on your own. The Home Support Worker Pilot is a government program designed to help you!

How does the Home Support Worker Pilot help you?

A professional home support worker is there to assist you with just that - the physical, emotional, and routine support of your loved one(s) daily life. There is a significant shortage of local skilled elderly caregivers in Canada; demand far outweighs supply. The Home Support Worker Pilot is put in place to replenish this shortage thus enabling you to provide better home care of your parent(s) or loved one(s).

There are 2 options for you to consider:

  1. Hire a foreign national with a status (studying or working) inside the country
  2. Hire a foreign national outside the country, provided they meet the eligibility and admissibility requirements of the Home Support Worker Pilot (National Occupational Classification 4412)

What you should know when hiring a live-in or full-time foreign worker with a local status:

  • 6 Month wait for the worker to get their work permit
  • Need LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) government approval
  • More cost-effective for you than recruiting through a home care company
  • If you employ a live-in caregiver, you cannot deduct or charge for room and board
  • You must pay the median prevailing wage for the occupation in the city/province where the work will be performed

What you should know when hiring a live-in or full-time foreign worker with a status outside Canada:

  • 1 year (12 months) wait for the worker to get their work permit.
  • Don’t need LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) government approval.
  • More cost-effective for you than recruiting through a home care company.
  • Employers must provide the caregiver with a formal job offer.
  • If you employ a live-in caregiver, you cannot deduct or charge for room and board.
  • You must pay the median prevailing wage for the occupation in the city/province where the work will be performed

Why is this your best option?

Hiring an independent worker from abroad provides long-term stability as they rely on you for employment and, in turn, you rely on them for their skill and commitment.

Note: Once a foreign worker completes 2 years (24 months) of work experience, they are eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
